Ode to the Watermelon

No other fruit speaks for the summer like the watermelon. When you first note the green orb in your local produce section you can’t help but smile, despite the high price, because you know summer is near. Then the day comes when they are piled high under the “buy one get one free” sign, and you are truly secure in the knowledge that you can put away the crock pot and bust out the barbecue.

This time of year, it’s all about dining outdoors and the summer table spread is as traditional as, well, the watermelon. So why not pay homage to this seasonal staple, bi-pass the red and white checker motif, and get into the spirit of things with a giant watermelon table?

All you need are two plastic table cloths -- one green, one red – and some dark navy blue or black paper plates. Working with your standard picnic table (though it will work on any table really) just put down the green tablecloth over the entire table, draping over the edges. Then fold or cut the red one to cover just the green table top, securing with double sided tape to keep the two in order. Next, you arrange the dark plates or “seeds” on top and voila! Giant watermelon table. For napkins, you can go all out and match the plates or go with white, AKA the smaller white watermelon seeds. We've got it all in store right now so stop by the shop and go crazy (in a fun way) choosing from a variety of picnic supplies guaranteed to lift the spirits of even your most sunburned guests.

Next week..."Take me to the ball game." Includes a great recipe for home-made Cracker Jacks!

LONG OR SHORT? ...........................................................................4-7-09

That is the question girls ask themselves every year. Selecting the right dress is based on a lot of factors: current trends, what friends are wearing, or the customs of the school. This year, there are two obvious trends across the board:

1. SHORT: No longer than tea length, but above the knee is really hot. The pouf skirt continues to be popular.

2. COLOR: The trend this year is what I call a rainbow of sherbet colors: in-between pastels and brights. They are vibrant pinks, peaches, sky blue, violet, and yellows.
